Chris Cahill

I met Chris early January 2007 when his mother, Marla, had called me and asked if I could help him. She explained to me that several years earlier he had been electrocuted while scaling a power pole and was thrown off and took a terrible fall. The trauma he endured resulted in multiple broken bones, coma, and various complications that endangered his life. We made an appointment for later that day to meet for his initial consultation.

I remember hearing Chris and Marla at the foot of the staircase. I heard what seemed to be mechanical noises, clanging of metal, and shuffling. I looked down and saw them trying feverishly to manage each step-one at a time- his mother by his side helping him with every move to prevent him falling. The metal clanging was from myriad braces Chris was wearing on his ankles and knees, as well as a metal cane.

I froze as I watched him struggle to make it up each step-I was not prepared for this, and was completely taken by his effort, his focus, and the energy he had to expend just to make it to the next step. His foot dragged behind him, his arms seemed contorted and stiff, and he had severe limitations to range of motion and dexterity. Once he reached the top of the stairs he looked me right in the eye and asked me if I could help him.

Chris worked harder than anyone else in the gym. He went from being unable to manage simple movements such as climbing stairs or picking-up a light dumbbell, to improving daily. The braces came off, he stopped using his cane, and he came in motivated to improve to a level I had seldom seen.

Now, 2 years later he participates in indoor cycling classes, Pilates, boot camps, has mastered all forms of weight training, and walks with balance and posture. His endurance, dexterity, and flexibility have increased to the point that he is now capable of executing every fitness-training regimen I prescribe.

Chris is inspiration to all LifeStage members where he is well known, well respected, and continues to improve each week. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with him and I feel his success can be used to motivate many others to overcome their limitations and help themselves enjoy life to its potential.

Chris has inspired me to do the same.
